Remedial Massage Therapy

Remedial Massage is a holistic treatment of the body which traces the discomfort as far as possible back to the original cause, healing both the cause of the disorder as well as the symptoms. Remedial massage focuses on the treatment of soft tissue injuries, aching muscles and postural imbalances using a variety of diagnostic techniques. When overworked muscles become tight, knotted or damaged, remedial massage can provide a healing treatment that can be gentle or strong, deep or shallow.

Remedial massage can be helpful in treating specific areas of muscle tension caused by stress or injury. The therapy also helps to get the blood flowing to injured tissues to speed up the repair process. Some of the more common causes of chronic pain where Remedial Massage can be of help are Tension Headaches, Stress, Repetitive strain injuries, Muscle sprains and strains, Bad Posture, Sporting injuries, and accidental injuries.

What does massage do and how does it help?

The aim of massage is to locate and release the aches and pains caused by the build up of tension in the body. Massage of these tense areas helps speed up the body's own repair mechanisms to create homeostasis. Surapa uses deep slow strokes either following or going across the muscle fibres, tendons and fascia. This technique also helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue. Other treatments may include Pressure Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, Cupping and stretching exercises.

Thai Herbal Ball Massage

Thai Herbal Massage Balls are one of Thailand's traditional massage tools which have been widely used since ancient times. They are known for their anti-inflammatory and relaxing properties, as well as their ability to treat a variety of ailments including chronic muscle pain, joint pain and various skin conditions. They help to relieve aches and strains and energise tired muscles after strenuous activity.

How does the ball work?

The Thai Herbal Ball is a cotton bag filled with more than ten varieties of herbs. The ball is steamed to temperatures of around 80-100 degrees Celsius, or dampened and then heated in a Microwave. This allows the essential oils to evaporate into the cotton cloth that the herbs are wrapped in, and when the ball is applied to the skin, the essential oils and heat are transferred to the recipient's body.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy is a massage modality originating in traditional Chinese medicine and is intended to increase blood flow as well as promote healing and relaxation. Cupping is commonly used as a treatment to relieve back and neck pains, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue and migraines headaches. Massage cupping is also used to drain excess fluids and toxins; stimulate the peripheral nervous system; bring blood flow to stagnant muscles and skin; and loosen adhesions, connective tissue and stubborn knots in soft tissue.

Cupping therapy is like the inverse of massage - rather than applying pressure to muscles, it uses gentle suction to pull them upward. Cupping is one of the best deep-tissue therapies available, as it is believed to affect tissues up to 4 inches in depth from the external skin.

There are two main cupping techniques: stationary and moving. The stationary method is where the cups are placed on the skin, suction is applied and the cups are left in position for a period of 5 to15 minutes.

The moving technique, often referred to as (gliding cupping) is the more commonly used form of cupping used by massage therapists. Prior to applying the cups, oil is administered to the skin to facilitate smooth movement. The cups are gently moved across the skin in a continuous motion and the suction in the cups causes the skin and superficial muscle layer to be lightly drawn into the cup. A cup may be "parked" for a short time on stubborn knots or over inflamed joints or tissue.

The skin will redden with strong massage cupping, indicating that circulation has been brought to the surface. The increased local blood supply will nourish the muscles and skin and allow toxins to be carried away.

After a cupping session you may notice redness and or a purple discolouration of the skin in the areas that were treated. This is a normal side effect of cupping and is considered to be a desirable outcome by the therapist. It is generally not be painful, despite looking much like a bruise, and should disappear within a few days.

Because the pores are now opened fully, the body is more susceptible to pathogenic influences after this procedure and you should keep your body covered and protected from wind and sunlight for 24 hours.
